Media-Whore D'Oevres

"PEACHES Geldof stopped breathing for several minutes and could have died or suffered brain damage after a suspected drug overdose in her flat. The pretty 19-year-old was given mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and chest compressions by a pal to keep oxygen pumping to her brain." (Mirror)

"LIKE penguins genetically programmed to reconvene each year at their mating grounds, the international fashion set migrates this week to the chic watering holes of Europe .. Slap-happy Naomi Campbell will arrive via tender from the yacht of Russian oligarch Vladimir Doronin, where she has been ensconced the last week. Stephen and Christine Schwarzman will descend from their villa in the hills, joining Joan Collins, Buzz Aldrin, Wilbur Ross, Natalie Cole, Paris Hilton and Ivana Trump. Meanwhile, Princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis has summoned a lineup of Euroflash for a formal banquet tomorrow in Regensburg, Germany, where Liza Minnelli will perform." (NYPost)

"It's Saturday, July 19. I wake up with a vague sense of dread. I know that at some point I have to schlep over to East Hampton--leaving the spiffy Shelter Island A-frame weekend paradise which I share with my bloke Jonathan Adler--and attend the party which Elie and Rory Tahari are throwing in my honor at their store. Why so fearful? No, I am not worried that Arden Wohl will graffiti my ass with lipstick. (If you don't know what I am talking about then go ask Ralph Lauren ..) DJ Lady Bunny is already jiggling and jiving behind her turn-tables .. I saw lots of my old pals including Pamela Fiori, Marjorie Gubelmann, Tom Kalenderian and landscape gardening geniuses Mario Navaro and Victoria Cardaro, and of course the gorge Tahari family. (Rory was rocking a fierce little yellow macramé halter number.) The most intriguing guest? It was probably The Countess from The Real Housewives of New York City. She was wearing a long white frock...she obviously didn't want my legs upstaging her legs." (Simon Doonan/Fashionweekdaily)

"Last night I went to a birthday dinner that Brooke Hayward and Peter Duchin and Lou Miano give every year for themselves. It’s a dinner for about thirty at a long table on the terrace of Lou’s penthouse apartment off Sutton Place. The hosts are the birthday boys and girl. It’s casual and folksy for New York. A lot of the guests are in the arts in one way or another." (NYSocialDiary)

"Western Republican states that mostly were ignored by Democrats until Sen. Barack Obama 'showed up' are turning into political battlegrounds in the 2008 election. Republicans, with few exceptions in recent decades, have become accustomed to sweeping the Plains and Mountain States from the Canadian border to the Rio Grande - President Bush carried all of them in 2004 and all but one in 2000. However, the Illinois Democrat is aggressively challenging Sen. John McCain in at least six of them, including Republican strongholds New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado, Montana and North and South Dakota, where polls show the race between the two rivals is close or in a dead heat." "I know I said yesterday that we should never mention Madonna's name again, but it's like scratching one's crotch in the summertime—you just can't help it! So I want to say that the most damaging thing of all in Christopher Ciccone's unimaginatively titled book, Life With My Sister Madonna, is not the revelation that Sean Penn told her she couldn't act; that she faked the flower petal scene in Truth or Dare; that she said a model in Vogue looked ugly; or that she doesn't like to feel ripped off. It's the cover photo! A black and-white shot of the superstar with hand on hip and eyes looking off the page, her famous gap tooth exposed by a glinty half-smile, it makes my girl look weird and nasty and facially implanted, almost like a deranged puppet. On the back cover is a shot of Ciccone himself—that's what she's glancing at, I guess—and he looks absolutely OK. This is outrageous!" (Musto)

"It was amazing to see so many people out in Central Park on such a brutally hot day, one of the hottest of the year for sure. But the place was packed and Santogold certainly did not disappoint. Reppin’ Bed-Stuy, this hip-hop/reggae diva hit the stage and refueled a worn-out crowd with a bolt of energy and charisma. It was a big sweaty feel good pow-wow when she got all arms swaying in the air. To warm up the crowd, as if they needed it in this heat, Diplo and A-Trak spun with Kid Cudi, Blaqstarr and Mz Streamz supporting on the mic. Their dance crew brought some serious New York playground vibes to the stage. I half expected them to bring out a jump rope and chant in unison." (Papermag)

"In recent years, the foreign-gallery opening in China has developed into a complex ritual with its own unique social lexicon. Who can forget Galleria Continua’s 798 debut back in 2005, leaving Beijing awash in prosciutto, pecorino, and Chen Zhen installations? Or Galerie Faurschou’s dinner last November for the absent but still-living Rauschenberg, whose work opened their Beijing space, under a rented tent and catered by the Chinese capital’s lone Michelin-certified chef? Pace Beijing originally scheduled its China debutante ball for the Day of the Aligning Eights (8-8-08), to coincide with that other, slightly bigger coming-out party: the Olympic opening ceremony."
