David Brooks: The Election Was Over 9 Months Ago

The election meme in the last week of the 2008 election is, since the NYTimes magazine story on the McCain campaigns demise, all about strategy and tactics. McCain, famously, of Senator Obama during the first debate that he "doesn’t understand a tactic and a strategy.'' Ironically, that charge seems to have rebounded against the Senator from Arizona.

The New York Times' resident conservative David Brooks was on The Brian Lehrer Show this morning, saying that he basically predicted that the race was over 9 months ago. "In the last 3 months of the campaign, nothing really changed ... tactics don't matter," said Brooks after stating that for 9 months he saw the race as one-sided.

"The fundamentals are just really all just one way ... it's just really hard to do it with tactics." Brooks also offered the tidbit that Senator Clinton and Obama did not like each other from the moment he entered the Senate. Curiously, Senator McCain -- who has run a virtually duplicate campaign as Clinton against Obama -- also started disliking the Illinois Senator almost the moment he began serving his term in the august body.
