Some Thoughts On The Golden Globe Nominations

(image via iftlg)

It is probably silly to argue about what should or should not have been nominated for The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual Golden Globe Awards because anyone who is anyone takes those awards to be a joke. Still, because it kicks off the campaigns of who or what is Oscarworthy in Lalaland, we'll play along and manufacture some righteous outrage. Some observations:

-- "In Bruges" is nominated for BEST MOTION PICTURE – COMEDY OR MUSICAL? Really?

-- As much as we are loathe to admit it, The Golden Globes gets kudos for nominating Robert Downey, Jr. for his role in "Tropic Thunder." A gutsy and interesting choice. And since "Oscar" doesn't reward comedies, it may be his only official-ish appreciation of his work.

-- No list of nominees for Best Television Series is complete without Showtime's Brotherhood.

-- No list of nominees for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series is complete without recognizing Annabeth Gish, for the aforementioned Brotherhood on Showtime.

--Any program other than John Adams in the miniseries category should not worry about the timing of a bathroom break.

-- Showtime is up to 8 nominations from 6 last year

--FX was shut out this year. Last year 3 noms (Ted Danson, Rose Byrne & Glenn Close "Damages"; Minnie Driver "The Riches." This year FX gets none (What about "The Shield"?)

-- Once again The Hollywood Foreign Press reward their golden boy, Javier Bardem, this time for a relatively ignored Woody Allen flic. At this point, Javier could pass away and he would still be nominated years later.

If The Oscars are the gay superbowl, then the Golden Globes are the equivalent of a gay all-star game.

Ron, notice that all films nominated for best feature, drama have yet to appear in motion picture houses? It's purely ridiculous.

Good point, Dan. It goes to show how ridiculously inside and meta the awards show game is,
